Abstract

This case is an example of a traumatic fistula occurring in an arteriovenous graft (AVG). The mechanism by which this occurs is the cannulation needle passing through the wall of the access (in this case the pseudoaneurysm) and entering a vein. When this occurs if the resistance to flow in the graft is higher than that in the perforated vein, a fistula will develop. Downstream resistance forom a stenotic lesion is a major contributing factor to this occurrence.
