Role of Surgery in Lung Metastases from Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Management for Surgeons

Abstract

Pulmonary metastasectomy is widely accepted in many malignancies. Its role in metastatic breast cancer is more controversial. It is a relatively easy operation that can often be performed via a minimally invasive approach. There is no data from randomised trials to show its benefit; however in a systematic review and meta-analysis of data from 16 cohort studies, the pooled 5-year survival was 46%. Two thirds of solitary pulmonary nodules in patients with breast cancer are not metastasis, with early-stage lung cancer being the most common diagnosis.
