Abstract
“Inglenook: A Cozy Place by the Fire” outlines the history and challenges of establishing a democratically run alternative school within the Toronto School Board. It describes the attempt to design a school curriculum that met the needs of disaffected students who rejected conventional approaches to pedagogy and teaching. The school focused on using the resources of downtown Toronto as a core part of its curriculum and having the students give back to the community through its unique Community Outreach Program. The chapter ends with an overview of the challenges the school currently faces with a shift in students’ demographics and the ongoing attempt by both the Ministry of Education and the Toronto District School Board to “conventionalize” the democratic and alternative nature of the school.
