Abstract

Human sweat glands are divided into two categories by their appearance under light microscopy: eccrine (distributed over the entire skin surface in humans) and apocrine (limited in distribution to sites including axillae, areolae, and around genitalia). The former primarily function to regulate body temperature. The role of the latter is less established, but seems possibly to involve communication between individuals by smell. This chapter reviews the structure and function of sweat glands and the diseases in which they are primarily involved.
