Abstract
The ankle is the most commonly injured weight-bearing joint. There is a broad spectrum of injury about the ankle from seemingly simple to extremely complex. Therefore, the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of ankle injuries can sometimes be difficult. Ankle sprains and fractures are typically low-energy rotational type injuries. Ankle fractures are often classified based on the rotational mechanism of injury utilizing radiographic patterns: the Lauge-Hansen classification system. Treatment of ankle fractures is largely based on stability of the talus in the ankle mortise. Many of the patients with these injuries have good clinical outcomes with nonoperative intervention.
