Orthopedic Surgery Clerkship

Abstract

Dislocations of joints are significant injuries to both the articular surface of the bones as well as surrounding soft tissue structures. Prompt reduction of the joint is crucial to reducing the risk of complications. Local complications include posttraumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis, and recurrent instability. Associated injuries that are commonly seen are vascular injuries, neurapraxias, and heterotopic ossification. Gentle soft tissue technique when reducing a dislocation is aided by excellent sedation and muscle relaxation.
