Abstract
There is increased understanding of how surgery can transform access to and the impact of public health initiatives internationally. Through innovations in technology, infrastructure, and workforce development, safe and effective surgical procedures can be made available outside urban centers in developing nations where resources are scarce. These advances should influence allocation of resources to such low-cost, high impact health system elements. Prioritization of surgical conditions and interventions is essential to this progress.
