Outreach and Engagement for Clients Experiencing Co-occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Practical Strategies and Tools to Promote Treatment Engagement

Abstract

Consumers with co-occurring substance use and behavioral health disorders present a particular challenge to the health care system. For example, only approximately half of all psychiatric inpatients receive follow-up behavioral health care. This is undoubtedly a result of various systemic problems; however, failure to properly engage consumers in care is a significant contributor. Authors Sawh and Smelson review practical strategies such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) as they apply to this population. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the MISSION program (Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking), an approach developed by Smelson and colleagues based on five evidence-based components.
