Abstract

Nipple discharge is not an uncommon complaint of women seeking evaluation at a breast center. Despite advances in testing and imaging, pathologic nipple discharge remains a clinical diagnosis that requires differentiation between benign physiologic and pathologic characteristics. While most cases of pathologic nipple discharge are the result of benign proliferative lesions, malignancy can present as nipple discharge in a small proportion of cases. Excision is appropriate for most cases of nipple discharge that are deemed pathologic, and a directed excision is helpful to ensure lesion removal. This chapter reviews the incidence, etiology, associated findings, evaluation, and treatment of nipple discharge.
