Abstract

Autoimmune connective tissue diseases are a group of disorders with heterogeneous clinical manifestations; however, they share one common feature, namely, inflammation of connective tissue. In some of these diseases, such as morphea or lichen sclerosus, the disease is limited to the skin, while in others, such as in dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, or systemic lupus erythematosus, skin lesions are only one of the possible manifestations of the disease, and the severity of the disease depends on which organs are involved. In this chapter we have focused on the most meaningful skin symptoms, which should help the clinicians and histopathologists making the proper diagnosis; however, we have also included less commonly observed clinical variants to illustrate a wide clinical spectrum of connective tissue diseases.
