Abstract
Open (rather than laparoscopic) cholecystectomy is performed when the laparoscopic critical view of safety cannot be achieved or for confirmed or suspected gallbladder malignancy or for a perioperative event or patient condition that prohibits a laparoscopic approach. This chapter describes indications, essential steps, variations, and complications of this procedure. It provides a detailed template operative note for the procedure.
