Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery

Abstract

This restrictive weight loss operation was originally developed by Dr. Edward Mason at the University of Iowa in 1982. Over the years, this open restrictive operation for morbid obesity has fallen out of favor in lieu of gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. However, it is essential for the practicing general surgeon to understand this procedure as patients may present with long-term complications related to it. This chapter lists indications, essential steps, technical variations, and complications of the procedure. It provides a detailed template for a dictated operative note.
