Abstract

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. Symptoms of dyspepsia are frequently, but not always, associated with the ingestion of a meal. Common symptoms associated with FD also include fullness, early satiety, and nausea. FD may coexist with other disorders such as IBS, gastroparesis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease which sometimes complicates its diagnosis. The recognition of this common overlap is important in order to limit unnecessary diagnostic testing and initiate directed therapy. The diagnosis of FD is mainly clinical and based on the Rome IV criteria. Treatment of FD relies on the biopsychosocial model and may consist of education about the disorder as well as pharmacologic, psychologic, and complementary therapies.
