Abstract
A surgical career combines technical prowess, decision-making, and caring for acutely unwell patients. For this reason, surgery is a fantastic career. It is also demanding, competitive and requires stamina. As medical students, there is much you can do to set your career off on the right footing. Although it may seem premature to consider postgraduate applications, surgery is competitive and things that stand out on your CV (audits, research, presentations) often take a long time to complete. In this chapter, we discuss things you can do at university to give you the best shot at getting the career you want.
