Conventional Nuclear Medicine in Pediatrics

Abstract

Hydronephrosis, which is the dilatation of the renal pelvis, is the most common urological anomaly, and uretero-pyelic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the main cause of hydronephrosis leading to surgical correction. The vast majority of hydronephrosis is now detected prenatally and is therefore asymptomatic. MAG3 renal scan is the main imaging investigation in order to assess the split function of the affected kidney and the presence of significant obstruction at the PUJ. Decision on surgical indication or conservative follow-up is based on ultrasonographic and nuclear medicine findings.
