Integrated Depression Care Among Latinos

Abstract

In this chapter we discussed integrated depression care modalities that can be applied in primary care settings with Latinos. The chapter starts with information about the rates of depression and mental illness in this ethnically diverse population and discusses determinants of health that can negatively impact access and provision of care in this population. We describe some of the cultural components that providers should consider when establishing the most appropriate treatment for depression in this population. Some of these cultural components include the important role the family plays in assisting the patient to seek help for depression and the value of having a relationship with the primary care provider that promotes “confianza” (trust) and “respeto” (respect). Different strategies and treatment modalities such as the warm hand-off, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy are presented as approaches that can be implemented to help the Latino patient understand depression and adherence to its treatment.
