Abstract
The Karapandzic flap is an effective means for reconstruction of large, full-thickness upper or lower lip defects. Such defects may be the result of trauma, excision of neoplasm or other etiologies. Smaller defects generally do not require such an extensive reconstructive option. The flap may be performed on either one or both sides of the face depending on the size of the defect. The design attempts to conceal the incisions within the existing nasolabial folds of the face. While the skin and mucosa are incised, care may be taken to preserve the nerves within the substance of the cheek. Unfortunately, microstomia should be considered as an unwanted side effect.
