Abstract

Population exposure to ionizing radiation mainly occurs from natural sources or from medical devices. Occupational exposure is usually low level and continues to decrease over time with tightening regulations, though its use in the medical field is increasing. Acute, high-dose exposure usually occurs due to accidental exposure and can lead to significant immediate and long-term medical problems. Chronic changes can be a result of long-term low-level exposure or the sequelae of a single episode of high-dose radiation.
