Abstract
The clinical chemistry laboratory within typically has the largest volume of testing, the most analytical equipment, highest budget for expenses, and largest numbers of personnel performing tests. Therefore, a program for the effective management of laboratory resources from within the chemistry laboratory division has the potential to have more of a significant impact on the clinical laboratory with regard to costs for delivering services than in other divisions. Utilization management can take one of two forms: eliminating unnecessary tests or decreasing the unit cost of tests that are performed by implementing process improvements. The most optimal strategy should incorporate both of these approaches to achieve the greatest overall impact on cost, efficiency, and clinical service.
