Abstract
As in the case of each regional circulation, the cerebral circulation has special characteristics and unparalleled control mechanisms. The brain also holds a particular role, as it lodges the principal centers of the cardiovascular and respiratory control system of the body. In this chapter, the arteries vascularizing the head and neck, i.e. the carotid and the vertebral arteries, are presented in detail, together with their anatomical variations. The surgical approaches are dealt with in detail. The venous drainage is presented by following the same pattern. The arterial and venous variations are richly illustrated with intraoperative images and angiograms. An integrative presentation of the cerebral microcirculation and autoregulation of flow completes the macroscopic and surgical description of the cerebral circulation. The clinical and the surgical relevance is particularly stressed in each circumstance.
