Adverse Effects of NSAIDs in the Gastrointestinal Tract: Risk Factors of Gastrointestinal Toxicity with NSAIDs

NSAIDs and Aspirin

Abstract

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) belong to a class of drugs that has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. They act mainly by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes including COX-1 and COX-2, which are involved in prostaglandin synthesis. This class of medications includes the traditional, non-selective NSAIDs that inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2, and the newer selective COX-2 inhibitors. They are highly effective in treating various painful conditions such as osteoarthritis and dysmenorrhoea. Unlike other NSAIDs, aspirin is used primarily for its anti-platelet effect to reduce cardiothrombotic risks.
