Abstract

This entry aims at presenting a short description of the gender equality treatment in Brazil’s legal system. It attempts to report basic norms, constitutional principles, and rules of equal treatment and gender equality based on Brazilian Constitution.

It is divided into two parts: the first part describes the social context of inequality and presents a timeline of equal treatment in Brazilian legal system; the second part describes the constitutionally based concepts such as equal treatment derivations of the principle of gender equality. It also presents legal rules and court decisions. The entry results were obtained after analyzing legislative and jurisprudential material. The entry results give an outlook of gender equality in Brazil’s legal system.
