Part of the book series: Fracture Management Joint by Joint ((FMJJ))

Abstract

Tibial plateau fractures constitute approximately 1 % of all fractures. Approximately 5–10 % of tibial plateau fractures are sports related, and proximal tibial fractures are especially common in high-energy sport injuries (i.e., skiing, football, rugby, etc.). The lateral tibial plateau is affected in 55–70 % of the cases, the medial plateau in 10–23 %, and both plateaux in 10–30 %. In this chapter, the treatment of simple tibial plateau fractures (type I to IV according to Schatzker’s classification) will be discussed, including conservative treatment, arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation (ARIF), and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
