Crime Prevention in the 21st Century

Abstract

As engineers working in the field of Security and Crime Science, we considered whether the WiFi signals which are ever-present in our urban environments can be exploited for any Crime Prevention and Detection functions in addition to its original intended use. Our solution was that WiFi signals could form the basis of a novel surveillance system based around a technology known as Passive Radar for use in urban areas. Since 2007 we have been running a research programme to investigate the feasibility of a WiFi-based passive radar system for detecting and tracking people. This chapter attempts to describe the key aspects of how passive WiFi radar works, demonstrate its capabilities, and outline potential applications of the technology for preventing and detecting crime.
