Abstract
The majority of breast abnormalities in the pediatric and adolescent patient population are benign. Common pediatric breast complaints include asymmetry or abnormal growth, discrete breast masses, nipple discharge, and localized inflammation. The diagnostic imaging modality of choice is ultrasound with Doppler imaging, which can determine size, physical characteristics, and vascularity of breast lesions. Further imaging, biopsy, and surgical intervention are necessary in only select cases, including patients who have a history of malignancy or radiation exposure or a rapidly growing or symptomatic mass. Premature surgery in benign pediatric breast disease should be avoided, as it can lead to damage of developing healthy breast tissue. Collaboration between pediatric surgeons, breast surgeons, and plastic surgeons is important to prevent complications in children who require surgery.
