Abstract
The skin’s barrier is constituted by a lipid matrix situated between the cells of the horny layer. It has a unique molecular organization based on stacked bilayers of fully-extended ceramides with cholesterol associated with the ceramide sphingoid moiety. Its physical state is gel-like. The presented near-native subnanometer-resolution data opens the door for molecular dynamics probing of the skin barrier’s physico-chemical properties.
