Abstract
This chapter presents the methodology and preliminary findings related to the development and roll-out of a Decision Support System for the Environment (D2S4E), designed to assist the Moroccan national decision makers in the evaluation of the state of the environment, and in their approach to sustainable development and environmental policy-making. D2S4E exhibits a number of salient features and attributes that help with modeling environmental issues and framing the decision making process in an integrated and holistic approach. Initial pilot deployment in the region of Grand Casablanca led to the identification of nine development initiatives that were fixed following the results of the selection of the significant issues in the region by the different stakeholders based on proactive scenarios. We also discuss some of the major challenges we faced during the different project phases in spite of the perceived importance of D2S4E for environmental management and evaluation at the highest levels.
