Abstract

All Sphinx mounts utilize the Vixen dovetail plate system for the quick and easy mounting of telescopes onto the equatorial mount. The system was introduced on the Vixen GP equatorial mounts in 1992. The dovetail system simplified the attachment and removal of telescope optical tubes from mounts, while assuring a firm and safe attachment to the mount when operational. The Vixen design has evolved into the most popular of the two standard mounting systems in the amateur astronomy world, with its only rival being the Losmondy Mounting Plate system.
