Abstract
A personal narrative of how technology has positively impacted one family with a 13-year-old son with autism. The iPad has improved both expressive and receptive communication, not only through the use of communication apps, but also because of the ease with which visual supports of all types can be created and taken anywhere. Through engaging and interactive games, books, and other apps, he has acquired confidence and skills. There have been improvements in fine motor, visual motor, imitation, language, creative play, and self-care skills. By providing a way to communicate more effectively, learn and reinforce skills, and support challenging areas, the iPad offers an affordable means of mitigating the difficulties he faces, thereby increasing his independence.
