Abstract
Injection laryngoplasty (IL) is a surgical technique that has been practiced for several years as an alternative to framework surgery. A specific material is infused into a vocal fold to treat different pathological conditions, such as monolateral laryngeal paralysis and unilateral or bilateral cordal atrophy, or to correct an unfavorable anatomical condition after progressive surgery (cordectomy or partial laryngectomy). Unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) represents the major indication for IL. The goal of surgery is the medialization of the paralyzed cord and closure of the glottic gap. If the implanted material is reabsorbable, a fiberoptic injection is usually preferred; on the contrary, if a long-term result is required, a microscopic approach is performed because a more precise and accurate injection of the substance is required, also owing to the irreversibility of the procedure.
In this chapter the technical procedure of IL by microlaryngoscopy is carefully explained, and widely used materials are examined.
