Accuracy and Fuzziness. A Life in Science and Politics

Part of the book series: Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing ((STUDFUZZ,volume 323))

Abstract

After my studies in mathematics, physics and philosophy I started research work in philosophy of science to write a Ph D thesis on “Probabilistic Structures in Quantum Mechanics” [101]. I became familiar with many-valued logic, probability logic and quantum logic and I was fascinated by quantum probability theory. Besides these “deviant logics” I also heard of another “non-classical system of logic” – the name was “Fuzzy Logic” – when I started working as a scientific assistant with the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of the Armed Forces Munich. Because I became interested in that new mathematical theory to handle uncertainty that seemd to be a competitor of probability theory I traveled in the summer of 1990 to Paris to attend the 3rd IPMU conference (International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems). This was my first Fuzzy Conference and it was the first time that I met hundreds of Fuzzy researchers – among them Lotfi Zadeh – it was the beginning of a long series!
