Abstract

This chapter addresses the issue of the care of persons with intellectual and developmental disability in large congregated institutions or residential care centers. These institutions were created mostly in the early twentieth century. The rise and the decline of these institutions as well as the philosophical currents predominant at the time are presented here. At the present time it is clear that congregating persons with IDD in large facilities resulted in significant social isolation for the individual and not necessarily in better services.
