Abstract
This chapter focuses on practical applications associated with the care of patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the emergency department focusing on emergency assessment, barriers to care, and understanding and utilizing the circles of supports as central to effective interdisciplinary care management. Recognition and utilization of the primary care medical home and the importance of smooth transitions and continuity of care will be the context for maximizing care quality within the emergency environment.
