Abstract

Children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) may have a multitude of medical and surgical co-morbidities and complications. Gastrointestinal diseases are common, ranging from relatively benign conditions to potentially life threatening ones. This chapter focuses on the most commonly encountered gastrointestinal problems that face many individuals with IDD. Topics that will be discussed include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), rumination syndrome, constipation, dysphagia, feeding tube problems and hepatitis.
