Abstract

This chapter reviews basic head and neck concepts including vascular, nervous, and lymphatic anatomy in addition to anatomic layers and boundaries. Developmental embryology, microanatomy, physiology, and pathology of head and neck tissues/organs are reviewed. Basic imaging modalities and photography standards are presented. The formulation of differential diagnoses and the stepwise algorithmic approach to disease management are outlined.

More focused facial plastic surgery topics of facial, skin, cephalometric, dental, and hairline analysis are summarized.

Basic surgical principles are thoroughly discussed, including nutrition, wound healing/dressings, hemostasis, and postoperative complications with a focus on complication management.
