Abstract

Urinary tract infections are common in women and place a significant economic burden on our health care system. It is important for gynecologists to be familiar with distinguishing uncomplicated cystitis from more complicated infections, and when it is indicated to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria. This chapter will review the presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and evidenced-based prevention strategies of UTIs. There is increasing antibiotic resistance, and the recommended treatments for uncomplicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, and recurrent UTIs are summarized.
