Abstract

Chapter 4 describes in detail the filtered backprojection (FBP) and iterative methods that are employed to reconstruct PET images of objects using the acquired data stored in sinograms. The FBP using various filters is accomplished by the Fourier technique. Two iterative methods—MLEM and OSEM—are applied, of which the OSEM is most widely used because of the shorter time required in image reconstruction. An example of the OSEM method is illustrated. The 3D reconstruction of images from 2D data is described. Corrections for partial volume effect on images are made by using recovery coefficients.
