Acute Care Surgery Handbook

Abstract

Acute care surgery (ACS) is a new specialty crafted by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) to solve the loss of appeal for a trauma career. In several other countries, inadequate health care delivery for emergency surgery patients and a vanishing glory of general surgery prompted a second look at this new paradigm. It is now taking hold all over the world and is gaining in popularity. In this chapter, we will summarize the current status around the world of this rapidly growing field and forecast future projections of where it is bound.
