Abstract

A new method for compressing the geometry data of 3-D polygon mesh that remeshes using SSV (Structuring Surrounding Vertices) is proposed. An original mesh is converted to a base mesh by collapsing the edges of the original mesh, and 2-D structured geometry data of the base mesh are created using SSV. Based on the connectivity of the base mesh, expanded structured geometry data are created by adding the vertices in the base mesh. The expanded structured geometry data takes the form of multi-resolution data, and coordinate data of vertices are transformed by prediction and update processes of the lifting wavelet transform. The transformed coefficients are encoded by SFQ (Space Frequency Quantization). Experiments applying the proposed method to several polygons meshes show that the proposed method gives a better coding performance at lower bit rates when compared to the conventional schemes.
