Abstract

Claude Guillermet de Bérigard (1578 or 1590–1663, also known as Claude Beauregard and Claudio Berigardo) was a French philosopher, humanist, mathematician, and astronomer. He held the chairs of philosophy at Pisa and Padua and Venice. His name is mostly connected to the polemic pamphlet Dubitationes in dialogum Galilaei Galilaei lyncey (1633), one of the first reactions of the academic environment to Galileo’s Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo (1632). The writing met with criticism for his superficial treatment of Galileo’s theories. During his appointment in Padua, he authored a philosophical work with which he took critical stances towards Aristotelianism (Circulus Pisanus de veteri et peripatetica philosophia, 1647) and defended a form of atomism.
