Abstract

The hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipient has unique transfusion requirements before, during, and after transplantation. The main goals associated with the transfusion of blood products is are reducing the risk of alloimmunization and avoiding potentially fatal complications of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease or lung injury, as well as peri- and posttransplant hemolysis. Additionally, careful attention must be paid to decrease the risk of infection transmission and potential medical errors.
