Abstract

Myocarditis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the heart muscle that is not secondary to ischemia. It can be caused by the action of several infectious (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc.) and non-infectious (drugs, toxins, autoimmune diseases, systemic diseases) agents. On many occasions, the underlying cause of myocarditis cannot be adequately established (Table 9.1). In developed countries, viral infections are the most common cause of myocarditis, with enteroviruses accounting for the majority of the cases.
