Leadership Opportunities for Physicians

Abstract

Although many individuals can be identified as a leader, defining the characteristics and roles beyond the level of clinical expertise and the doctor-patient relationship of physician leaders in the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare is more challenging. Some analogies can be made with business leaders, however, physician leaders, particularly in evolving accountable care organizations, are often expected to have an expanded repertoire of skills, knowledge and personal characteristics. Although current role models and training may not be sufficient, much can be learned from more traditional leadership roles held by physicians and others. This chapter will discuss the definition of leadership, characteristics of good leaders, styles and methods of leadership, managing expectations, and why some physicians fail as leaders. The specific skills and roles described herein particularly focus on roles in the health care delivery system, and in accountable care organizations, in particular.

A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.
