Comprehensive Guide to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders

Abstract

The present review describes culturally shaped manifestations of stress disorders in Kyrgyzstan and demonstrates that all the observed disorders are, at least partially, culturally constructed. The example of Kyrgyzstan shows how traditional values, beliefs, and rituals are reflected in behaviors of persons exposed to emergency situations, pathoplastically influencing not only clinical signs of PTSD but also determining communication patterns with mental health professionals. Authors underline that understanding the diversity of stress-related behaviors in different cultural settings is extremely useful in preventing both under- and overdiagnosis of PTSD.
