Abstract
Major traumatic natural disasters have occurred worldwide. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been the most common psychiatric disorder discussed by the studies addressing the psychological sequelae of adolescents after traumatic natural disasters. In this chapter we reviewed the classification and impacts of natural disasters; prevalence of PTSD; change of diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders system; factors related to the development of PTSD; predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors related to the development of PTSD; courses and factors related to changes in PTSD; roles of developmental stages for adolescents who have experienced natural disasters; methods for evaluating psychological reactions to natural disasters in adolescents; roles of PTSD on mental health problems other than PTSD; and treatment strategies for PTSD in adolescents.
