Abstract

The term neurologic injury refers to damage of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. The ultimate outcome from such injuries can be highly variable and depends on what part of the nervous system is involved, the mechanism and severity of the injury, and the effectiveness of the medical or surgical interventions. Often these interventions are time-sensitive. In this chapter, we describe some of the common neurosurgical emergencies, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
