Abstract
Cancer in childhood is rare. Only 0.5 % of all tumors are pediatric tumors. The incidence of the most common pediatric malignancy is approximately 3 children per 100,000 children aged <15 years per year and accounts for approximately one fourth of all pediatric malignancies.
To define rarity is difficult, particularly in pediatrics with a majority of pediatric malignancies being “rare.” There are several attempts to define rarity. “Orphan disease” is another synonymous term for a rare disease. An international consensus group defined rare cancers in adults by suing incidence with a threshold at 6 per 100,000/year.
