Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss treatment of facial pain and neuralgias. There are many pharmacological treatment options for classical trigeminal neuralgia. When those fail or are not tolerated, more invasive interventions are available. Other cranial neuralgias include occipital, glossopharyngeal, nasociliary, superior laryngeal, and supraorbital neuralgias. As a group, they can be challenging to diagnose and treat.

Causes of facial or oral discomfort include painful trigeminal neuropathies, temporomandibular dysfunction, and burning mouth syndrome. Pharmacotherapeutics are discussed from both a medical and a surgical standpoint with consideration of the limited evidence base.
