Abstract

Based on the archives, the type and nature of the Araucanian society of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the specifics of its social structure, political organization, religious beliefs and practices, and the demographic structure are discussed. Also considered is the standardization of and simplicity in the material culture during this period as best represented in ceramics and in ceremonial mound stratigraphy, which is hypothesized to be the result of more collective labor given to the war and less to the production, display, and accumulation of elaborate objects that symbolize individual wealth and prestige.
