Abstract

Bartolomeo Spina was one of the leading theologians of the sixteenth century. As a Dominican friar who followed in the footsteps of Thomas Aquinas, Spina strongly opposed Pietro Pomponazzi’s views on the mortality of the soul, claiming that the immortality of the human soul can be demonstrated on the basis of Aristotle’s texts themselves. Spina is also remembered for his participation in inquisitorial activities in Italy during the 1520s. He authored a number of works on witchcraft, where he upheld the authenticity of witchcraft and its maleficence.
